Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health condition characterised by recurrent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform. While everyone experiences occasional unwanted thoughts or repetitive behaviours, OCD is different; it can be highly distressing, and significantly impact upon daily life.

Recognising the Signs of OCD

OCD can manifest in a number of different ways, but some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Intrusive Thoughts: Unwanted, distressing thoughts, images, or urges that repeatedly enter your mind; e.g., fears of germs, harming yourself or others, doubting actions you’ve taken, or needing things to be perfectly symmetrical.
  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviours aimed at reducing OCD-related anxiety, e.g., handwashing excessively, checking things repeatedly, or arranging objects in a specific order.
  • Need for control: A strong need for control over their thoughts and environment to manage their anxiety.
  • Constant Checking: Repetitive checking of locks, appliances, etc., driven by fear of harm.
  • Repetitive Counting: The involuntary need to count things to prevent perceived dangers.
  • Unwanted Thoughts of Harm: Disturbing thoughts about violence or taboo subjects that cause distress.
